Since being acquired by Red Hat in June 2017, the Codenvy team has been working hard on two things:

  1. Moving the Codenvy enterprise features into the free and open Eclipse Che project.
  2. Adding Eclipse Che (with many of the Codenvy features) to OpenShift.io.

This has been a work of passion for the team — we always wanted to provide all the features in the open so this is very exciting.

Che 6 will bring enterprise features previously only found in the Codenvy commercial product to the free open source Che project, and it can still be installed behind the firewall in Red Hat OpenShift or Docker.

Today we merged Che 6 into master which signals the hardening phase! [Che 6 is now released — see the blog]

Why is this exciting?

With Che 6 organizations will be able to take advantage of:

  • Multi-user capabilities with oAuth or LDAP/AD (via Keycloak).
  • A redesigned IDE and user dashboard with a cleaner look and feel.
  • Enhancements to Java support as well as new Typescript and YAML language servers (automatic support of Kube YAML too!).
  • Permission controls on stacks, workspaces and organizations.
  • Collaborative workspaces with Factories and CheFiles (URLs generate bespoke workspaces from any context).
  • Runs on Docker, OpenShift and OpenShift Origin (native Kubernetes support is also being worked on).

To keep getting updates on Eclipse Che (…the future of Codenvy) please make sure you keep an eye on the Che blog and follow Eclipse Che and OpenShift.io on Twitter.

I’m expecting things to be a little quieter during the holiday season but nonetheless we’re expecting to have Che 6.0 released as GA at the end of January.

Until then if you’d like to get involved check in at our repo where you can read the issues and PRs coming for Che 6 or try the latest release (6.0.0-M3).
